Introduction to a Future Mechanical Engineer

Hi everyone, my name is Lindsey Cox and I am a Mechanical Engineering major. I am a senior and will graduate this December. I chose mechanical engineering on a whim but have ended up loving it. I am an engineering Co-Op for American Airlines in Fort Worth, TX in which I work on the interior make-up of our aircraft. During my first co-op in the fall of 2015, I was given the opportunity to travel to Hong Kong and work on site for one of our major retrofit program. This was my first time to travel to that part of the world and I absolutely loved it and hope to go back soon.

I am currently training for my second half marathon this April for the OKC memorial run. I ran cross-country and track through high school but took a few years off when I went to college. It was really hard to transition back into running after that much time off but I’ve slowly gotten into the groove and am excited to be training again. I hope to be able to run a full marathon this September in Chicago.
Outside of school and running, I love to be outdoors. I really enjoy hiking, fishing, being out on the lake water skiing and relaxing at the beach. Costa Rica is another one of my favorite places because is it full of fun outdoorsy activities like hiking to waterfalls, zip lining, and ATV tours.  I also spend a lot of my time with my dog, Ruger. He is a 7-month-old golden retriever and is the sweetest pup alive! He loves to spend time stomping around at the creek and running around the dog park.

I am also a big sports fan. I love playing soccer, racquetball and basketball although I am only 5’3 so I’m not great at it. I am from Dallas, TX so naturally I am a huge Dallas Cowboys fan and am still recovering from the sad loss this past weekend. I also come from a family of OU grads so I love cheering for OU football and basketball.

  1. It was definitely nice reading about your internship experiences since I am an aerospace engineer! So hearing that not only were you working on aircraft but also in Fort Worth (I love the area) was really interesting. Good luck on your half-marathon! Running that distance is always a huge accomplishment, and also a sign of relief when it is complete. I am also a big Dallas Cowboys fan! Really wish they did not lose last week but it happens.

  2. Reading about your internship was really interesting! I am also an aerospace engineer and have my first internship with Nordam this summer. I can't even imagine myself working on airplanes yet, much less going to a foreign country to work on them. Sorry about your Cowboys! If it is any consolation the Packers left all of their luck at Jerry's World.

  3. Wow, how exciting that your studies took you to Hong Kong, Lindsey! That sounds really exciting. And your Ruger is such a cutie: puppy energy is the best, and Golden Retrievers are such awesome dogs. Maybe you will find a way to weave Ruger into your stories for this class: there are lots of animals in the Indian epics and even more animals in all the Indian folktales if you want to explore those for class. There is a famous mythical dog named Sarama (more about Sarama here in Devdutt Pattanaik's Pashu), and also Shyama and Sabala (who show up in this comic book: Divine Beings) ... you will not meet up with them in the epics, but if you want to learn their stories, there are plenty of opportunities to do that in the class. Then you could do story-time for Ruger! :-)

  4. Hi Lindsey, nice to meet you. Congrats on almost graduating! My brother is a freshman this year and he is also doing Mechanical Engineering! He is just starting but really seems to like it so fat. That is awesome that you run half marathons and possible a full one day! Good luck! I wish I enjoyed running haha but I do not! I am also a very outdoorsy person and love all the things you have listened. Your dog is also the cutest thing ever!

  5. Hello Lindsey!
It's so exciting that you were able to go to Hong Kong! Mechanical Engineering sounds so difficult! But i don't like math so maybe that's why haha. It's cool that you're enjoying your major and that you already work in it! Your dog is so cute and that's a really good photo of Ruger! I look forward to reading more of your stories throughout the semester!

  6. Hello.
I am from the same Dallas Ft. Worth area too. I'm originally from Ft. Worth, and grew up most of my life in a tiny town called Rhome (although I attended one of the bigger high schools in the area: North West). I moved to Oklahoma in the summer of 2010, than started attending OU a few years later. I am glad to hear you enjoy marathons. I have worked the OKC marathon several times at my church. We are the ones who do the free pancakes and sausages all morning: First United Methodist Church of OKC, directly east of the memorial.
A healthy mind, body and spirit are key aspects for us to be a healthy being.

  8. Hi Lindsey! Mechanical engineering sounds so cool! Are you wanting to work with planes exclusively? That is soo cool that you got to go to Hong Kong. I would love to hear about what it was like. I have only been to Europe, so Asia, South America, and Africa are still on my lists. I also love the outdoors, and Costa Rica sounds amazing. I look forward to reading your story from this week!

  9. Hello Lindsey! Wow, you got to go to Hong Kong for work, I’m so envious. What was the most interesting place you got to visit or food you got to eat when you were there? It’s really cool that you like the outdoors and exercise. For the longest time, I’ve been trying to convince myself to exercise more, but it’s just not happening! Hopefully I am motivated to start soon. Kudos to you being a female in engineering. I hardly see women engineers on campus and it's so great that you're pushing through!

  10. Hey Lindsey,
Congrats on almost being a college graduate. I think it is awesome that you were able to travel to Hong Kong. That is actually one of the places I would love to visit in the near future. Also I will totally see you at the OKC Half Marathon because I will be there right with you. I also haven't done this much running since Cross Country in High School. I understand the struggle all too well on how it feels getting back into it. The feeling you get afterward is truly rewarding though. Also your dog is adorable. Some day I hope to own a golden retriever but for now I have a lab/ Corgi mix puppy that has so much energy sometimes I can barely handle it. She actually comes on runs with me! She can probably do the 13.1 miles on her own without me and still have energy left to run!

  11. Lindsey, it was so interesting to read your introduction. How exciting it is that you got the opportunity to travel to Hong Kong. How was that experience? What was your favorite part? I bet there was so much to do and experience! You sound like a very active person - good luck with your marathons. Where is a good fishing place in OK? I also love to fish, camp, etc.

  12. Hi Lindsey!

It was so nice to read about you! I am also from the DFW area (Go Cowboys!) and think it is absolutely wonderful that you have the opportunity to work with American Airlines; that can definitely open up a lot of other opportunities later. It sounds like you are a very ambitious woman. Good for you for getting back into running, even after taking a few years off. It is apparent that you are very passionate about it. Your sweet pup is adorable! Congratulations on your job and your travel experiences!

  14. Lindsey, that's so crazy that you chose your major on a whim! I could have never done that. I thought about what I wanted to do for years and years before college. That's great that you run marathons! I cannot run. I want to but my body just does not like it. I also love fishing! These random warm days have been great! Your puppy is adorable! I want a golden retriever when I move out. Thanks for sharing!

  15. Hi Lindsey!
Nice to meet you! I am so amazed by your career aspirations! That is definitely a field that I really respect, because it requires so much hard work! Your opportunity with American Airlines must've been a dream. I love travelling, and I am sure you do too! I am also hoping to run the marathon this semester, but with school, and life in general, it has been very hard to train. Maybe you might have some tips? I wish you the best of luck with your last two semesters here, and your future! Very nice to meet you!

  17. Hi Lindsey! Nice to meet you!

First off, congrats on all you have accomplished thus far. You sound like a smart, hardworking girl! Second, I LOVE YOUR DOG! SO CUTE! I too have a dog named Ruger. He is a year and a half old. I love him so much, but where I live does not allow animals so he had to stay behind with my mom. Talk about sad!! Also, props to you for almost graduating! I too graduate in December and boy am I ready!
