Growth Mindset: Relaxing

I deciding to create this meme after learning how to with my tech tip this week because it's something I think is easily forgotten. I often get so caught up in school and work and bills that I don't let my body and mind have the proper rest they require. Sometimes I need to just take a break and come back to whatever I am doing with more energy.

Growth Mindset: Difficult Is Not Impossible

This is something I have learned to accept after studying engineering in college. So many times I run into difficult problems that really do seem impossible to fix or impossible to improve but there really is always a way. Everything can be improved regardless of difficulty. I just have to keep reminding myself of that!

Week 8 Growth Mindset

I have really enjoyed the structure of this class. Since it is so flexible and based off a point system, it is not necessary to complete every assignment. However, because I set a goal for myself to finish this class by week 10 so that I will be able to use the second half of the semester to focus on my capstone, I have worked hard to complete every assignment and almost every extra credit. From this I have learned that I am most effective in a goal-oriented situation. I think I am equally motivated whether someone else or myself sets the goal as long as it is reasonable.

One thing I hadn’t had much exposure to until this class was giving critical feedback. I tend to be a perfectionist to a point and often if something I was apart of, like a group report, was not up to my standards I would just redo it myself. Through both giving and receiving feedback, I feel I have gained a method in which I can provide feedback to other.

I've really enjoyed doing the extra credit growth mindsets each week. It's nice to stop for a moment during the week to reflect on my behaviors and what I have and have not been successful at and why. I also really enjoy scrolling through the growth mindset memes because most of them are extremely relatable and it's triggers my acknowledgment of my behaviors or motivates me to improve.

Growth Mindset: Why You Made a Mistake

I think determining the root cause of why a mistake or error was make is a crucial aspect of learning. Failure is inevitable but if you just brush it off and don't make an effort to learn why this may have happened, you lose the opportunity to learn and grow from that experience. The mistake that was made may apply to other things so if you determine why it was a mistake you will be less likely to repeat it in the future and may be able to find a way that does work.

Growth Mindset: Feeling Safe

I strongly related to this meme because I often struggle with feeling comfortable in a classroom. I am relatively shy and because of a few situations growing up, I would probably die before I ever answer a question out loud whether I know the answer or not.  I think if I had felt less judgment from my teachers growing up, I would have felt more comfortable answering questions and making mistakes and being able to learn from those mistakes. If I become a teacher, which I plan to do when I retire from industry, I hope to create a classroom that encourage mistakes and gives each student a feeling of security.

Growth Mindset: Growth in Other Classes

This semester I am enrolled in a course on leadership and management for engineers. Until this point I had never had a class focused on how I learn and how I am successful and now my leadership and management course as well as this course have made me stop and think about what my strengths and weaknesses are and how I learn. I’m glad I waited until my senior year to take these classes because I feel I am better equipped to stop and be able to honestly evaluate myself.  I feel that by identifying these abilities and traits about myself will help be to better manage myself in school and my future career.

Growth Mindset: Trust Yourself

I really related to this meme this week because I have been having trouble trusting myself this week. I am involved in my senior capstone group and we are currently working on brainstorming ideas for our design. Being a girl in engineering I have often struggled with trusting that I have good enough ideas to contribute but have been working on trusting myself and my intelligence to be able to take a risk and contribute to this project.

Growth Mindset: Thinking is Doing

I loved this meme because of its recognition of thinking being part of a process. I have a very analytical personality and often spend more time thinking about things before I take action that most people. People often associate a lack of action with laziness but I think it’s important to acknowledge that thinking things through is not a bad thing!

Growth Mindset: Motivation after Failure

I really liked the motivation of this meme. I feel like a lot of the time when something gets difficult or frustrating for me, it's tempting to want to simply quit. However the most important learning situations to me are the one's in which you fail or nearly fail. Failure allows you to sit back and reassess the situations which can lead to bigger and better things. Then once failure occurs, it is crucial to try  again and again until you get the desired result.

Growth Mindset

I have never heard of Carol Dweck or the growth mindset before but found myself agreeing with everything she said. I personally find few things as defeating as trying your hardest and still receiving a bad grade. Adding value to the process in which a student thinks, I feel would help students stay motivated regardless of their actual result. Since I've been at OU, I feel the teaching style has mostly shifted to appreciating the process. Being an engineering major, most exams and homework's that I do are lengthy and requiring several steps. Because of this, most teachers give partial credit and recognition of the process I use and thus encouraging the growth mindset. I also know many students who began engineering, did not perform well and ended up dropping out of the major. I feel it would have been beneficial for students like that to have had the "not yet" grade. So many students, including myself, are so scared of failure that they would rather remove the challenge and do something they are comfortable with. I strongly believe the growth mindset could make a huge impact on the number of students challenging themselves and remaining motivated regardless of any sort of grading system. I look forward to digging deeper into this concept and applying it to my life.
