Reading Notes: Public Domain Mahabharata, Part A

Vyasa dictated the Mahabharata to elephant-headed god Ganesha.

Satyavati was a fair maiden that a fish carried in its stomach until a fisherman caught the fish and opened it. She was beautiful but had a fish odor until the great sage Parashara made her a virgin and gave her a delicious odor for giving birth to son, Vyasa.

King Shantanu desired Satyavati be his wife but her father figure, the fisherman, refused her hand because the King would not disinherit Devavrata, son of Ganga. The fisherman wanted her son to be promised the heir but King Shantanu could not consent to that. Devavrata is the son of King Shantanu and goddess Ganga and is also known as Bhishma.

Karna was born to Kunti with celestial earrings, an invulnerable coat of mail, and the eyes of a lion and the shoulders of a bull. Kunti was shamed and wrapped him in sheets and placed him in a wickerwork basket and set the basket afloat in a river. Radha and husband Adhiratha were unable to obtain a son until Radha found the basket. She adopted the babe and Karna grew up to become a powerful youth and mighty bowman.

Karna went and challenges that he could accomplish and surpass the feats Arjuna had accomplished. Drona gave Karna permission to display his skills and he performed every feat Arjuna had. Arjuna was furious and did not know they were brothers. Duryodhana gave Karna a kingdom in return for the boon to be his comrade and valiant warrior.
